Editor’s note – Funeral Mass for Father Dan Mulhauser, SJ was celebrated on Saturday, May 13 at the Panasci Family Chapel at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York. It will be livestreamed on the Cathedral-Basilica website aganacathedral.org, the Agaña Cathedral Facebook Page and YouTube channel. --- Fr. Daniel J. Mulhauser obituary, May 7, 2023 Fr. Daniel J. Mulhauser, S.J., 96, of Syracuse, NY, passed away at Murray-Weigel Hall, Fordham University on May 7, 2023. He was born on January 28, 1927, in Syracuse, NY to the late Grace (Cushing) and George Mulhauser. He is survived by his nieces and nephews: Mary "Sugar" (Evertz) and Craig Lee, Barbara (Evertz) and Paul Sansoucy, Katie (Evertz) and Stephen Brown, Dennis Conard and Jane Helmer. Fr. Mulhauser (Fr. Dan) is also survived by Chris and Daniel Mulhauser, Linda and Paul Mulhauser, MaryAnn (Mulhauser) and Jeff Place. Christine and George Mulhauser, 15 grand nieces and nephews and 9 great grand nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Mulhauser) and Emil Evertz, brother and sister-in-law, George Mulhauser and Mary (Prevost) Mulhauser and his nephew, George Evertz. A native of Syracuse, Fr. Dan grew up in the West End where he attended Porter School. He was a dedicated Boy Scout earning his Eagle Scout award in the summer of 1942. The family moved in 1942 to western New York where they were employed at Curtiss Wright Corporation. Fr. Dan graduated from Kenmore High School in 1944 after which he enlisted in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946. After discharge he attended Regis College, Denver, CO until 1949 when he received his bachelor's degree. After earning a master's degree in philosophy in 1951 from St. Louis University, he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus on August 17, 1951. He was ordained a priest at Fordham University on June 18, 1960, by Cardinal Spellman. Fr. Dan served at Le Moyne as Chaplain of the College and teacher of Theology from 1962 to 1974. He studied at Chicago Theological Seminary from 1968 to 1970, receiving the Doctor of Pastoral Counseling degree. He was assigned Director of Vocations in New York from 1974 to 1980. Beginning in 1980 through 2002 he served on a mission to Guam where he was the Director of St. Ignatius House of Studies, Counselor at the University of Guam, and Campus Minister of the University. He also served as Director of Novices at the Jesuit novitiate in the Republic of Palau from 1994 to 1997. After returning from Guam to the mainland in 2002, Fr. Dan served at Le Moyne College as Chaplain to the Alumni from 2002 to 2009 and as Chaplain Emeritus to the Alumni from 2009 to 2022. As a result of his work in Campus Ministry for many years, the College dedicated the "The Daniel J. Mulhauser, S.J. Campus Ministry Center" in 2017. Fr. Dan had a regular weekend pastoral assignment at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish in Baldwinsville from 2003 to 2020. He enriched the spiritual lives of many by leading them through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. He was, in addition, the spiritual counselor to many clerical and lay persons. Over the years, Fr. Dan found enjoyment skiing in Colorado, New Zealand, Adirondacks, and racing at Labrador Mountain. He made several canoe trips in the Adirondacks and often was found working out in the gym at Le Moyne College. He was an excellent bridge player enjoying weekly games with friends. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Le Moyne College competitive athletics and in particular its lacrosse team with which he traveled to games on occasion. Whatever activities Fr. Dan was engaged in, his smile, good humor and words of wisdom enriched and inspired many lives over the years. Visiting hours were held at Panasci Family Chapel at Le Moyne College, 1419 Salt Springs Road, Syracuse, NY 13214, on Friday, May 12, 2023, and on Saturday, May 13. Dan often expressed profound gratitude for the grace of his Jesuit vocation and his many opportunities to accompany young people along their journey.
