The Capuchins announced that Father Gus had died peacefully this morning, Friday, Feb. 12. Father Gus was 65. Archbishop Byrnes asks everyone in the archdiocese to remember the beloved Chamorro friar in their prayers.
Father Agustin Aguon Gumataotao, OFM Cap was born on Guam on January 8, 1956, the son of Agustin Ungacta Gumataotao and the former Rosa Fejerang Aguon. He grew up in Saint Jude Thaddeus parish, Sinajana, where he became an altar boy. After completing some courses at the University of Guam, he entered the Capuchin Order on August 31, 1976 at the Capuchin Novitiate in Milton, Massachusetts. Archbishop to celebrate Mass for Protection of the Unborn 4 p.m. Friday at Cathedral-Basilica in unison with other parishes (Click here for pdf copy of story)
Archbishop Michael Byrnes will celebrate Mass for the Protection of the Unborn 4 p.m. Friday, January 29 at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica in Hagatna in unison with other Catholic churches on Guam.
The Archdiocese of Agana is showing solidarity with Catholics nationwide in prayerful opposition to abortion through the Masses.
Archbishop Byrnes encourages all Catholics to participate in the Masses. Because of the pandemic, the archdiocese is adjusting its observation of the national March for Life peaceful protest against abortion and the Roe vs. Wade supreme court decision which legalized abortion 48 years ago. With safety in mind, we will celebrate Masses in place of the local rally.
The faithful can attend Mass at their nearest participating parish or follow through live streaming or live broadcasts which will occur at some of our churches on Jan. 29. Catholic Educational Radio KOLG 90.9 FM will air the 4 p.m. Mass live at the Cathedral.
Prayer intentions for the unborn will be recited. The churches will toll their bells at 4 p.m. in memory of the millions of unborn children killed through abortion.
National March for Life organizers have adjusted their annual activities protesting the legalization of abortion through Roe vs. Wade this year because of the global pandemic.
“In light of the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic which may be peaking, and in view of the heightened pressures that law enforcement officers and others are currently facing in and around the Capitol, this year’s March for Life will look different,” March for Life organizers declare in a statement on their official website, https://marchforlife.org/statement-on-2021-march-for-life/.
“The annual rally will take place virtually and we are asking all participants to stay home and to join the March virtually,” officials state.
The health and protection of all Guam Catholics is also a high priority of the Archdiocese of Agana. We will follow the same prudence of the national March for Life group. Gathering for prayers and Masses at individual churches under controlled and restricted conditions allows the Church to more effectively promote the safety of all participants. It also follows established archdiocese and community protocols.
Parish Mass schedules accompany this news release and can also be found at archagana.org.

Archbishop removes Adrian Cristobal from clerical state
Archbishop Michael Byrnes announces that former Father Adrian Cristobal has been laicized in accordance with violations against the Sixth Commandment with minors.
The canonical administrative penal process began in 2018 after consulting with the Vatican. Laicization, or Loss of Clerical State means Cristobal is not to wear ecclesiastical garb or be addressed by titles used by ordained priests, such as Father or Reverend. He is deprived of clerical offices, functions, and any designated power granted to him as a cleric. He has no right to financial support from the Archdiocese of Agaña.
This decision is in accordance with the authority granted to Archbishop Byrnes by the Holy See. The Archdiocese completed its canonical administrative process in December 2020.
Legal counsel has advised that the archdiocese make no further comment on the matter due to on-going litigation.

Most Catholic schools to resume face-to-face instruction Jan. 19; Online learning still an option for those who prefer
The Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Agaña will continue instruction in various modes withing the next few weeks. All Catholic schools will focus on following health and safety guidelines, delivering effective academic and religious education, and addressing the social and emotional well-being of the students. Lessons learned from the first half of this school year will continue to guide the policies and practices of all the schools.
Most schools will return to face-to-face instruction on their campuses on Tuesday, Jan. 19 after observing the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 18. Those schools will continue to offer online instruction for students whose families are not comfortable with their children returning to classes in person. Some schools will continue online classes and gradually return to face-to-face instruction during the second semester.
All the schools have rewritten guidelines that comply with the expectations of the Department of Public Health and Social Services. For those schools starting classes on campus, social distancing in and out of the classrooms, activities that minimize the congregation of many students, the uses of face masks and shields and the availability of some sneeze guards will help prevent the transmission of the virus. Families are asked to check their sons and daughters before coming to school to make sure they have no symptoms of any illness. Families are also encouraged to curtail activities outside the home to keep their children safe, healthy, and free from the coronavirus.
Attached is general information on each school’s plans for next week. Families are encouraged to check the schools’ websites, Facebook pages, and communication from the school to get specific information on school activities next week.

The historic statue of Santa Marian Kamalen returns to Hagatna after her first-ever islandwide visitation that took place just last May 2, 2020 as Archbishop Michael Byrnes reconsecrated our island to the Blessed Virgin Mary in solidarity with the mainland U.S. and Canada. (Umatuna file photo by Tony Diaz)
Monsignor James Benavente and the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica have released the schedule and routes for the islandwide visitation of the statue of Santa Marian Kamalen during the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday, December 8.
The information is provided in a PDF attachment accompanying this announcement. A second document with the schedule of novena and nightly Masses is also posted below this story.
The Archdiocese of Agana announced last month that it will still commemorate the Feast of Santa Marian Kamalen this year. However, instead of the traditional procession in Hagatna, the historic statue of the Blessed Mother will travel to the faithful throughout the island. The change is necessary this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The day will begin at 6 a.m. with a novena and Mass celebrated by Archbishop Michael Byrnes at the Cathedral-Basilica. The statue will leave the Cathedral-Basilica at 7:50 a.m. and will travel through the roads of Guam in an islandwide visitation to all Catholic parishes. At the request of Naval Base Guam, Santa Marian Kamalen will visit the historic Sumay village, cemetery and two chapels.
The vehicle carrying the Santa Marian Kamalen statue will travel slowly past the churches and other sites but will not stop. While Santa Marian Kamalen will visit all the churches, it is strongly encouraged that the faithful line the streets where the Santa Marian Kamalen statue will pass to prevent large clustering.
Monsignor James emphasizes that this islandwide procession with Santa Marian Kamalen will not be a motorcade. To avoid creating traffic congestions that would impact regular motorists, the faithful are strongly asked NOT to organize motorcades that attempt to follow the statue as this may pose safety issues for parishioners while approaching large crowds.
For safety reasons, please also do not attempt to approach the vehicle to touch the statue’s glass encasement. Due to the pandemic, the Cathedral-Basilica staff will not be allowed to receive items into their vehicles.
Novena and Masses began last Monday at the Cathedral-Basilica and are continuing nightly throughout the week. (Schedule is attached).
Monsignor James, Pastor of the Cathedral-Basilica is coordinating the islandwide drive with his team at the Agana parish just as they did last May 2. On that historic day, Archbishop Byrnes reconsecrated our island to the Blessed Virgin Mary in solidarity with the United States mainland and Canada. It was the first time in history that the Santa Marian statue was taken down from her niche for a celebration other than for commemorations on December 8.
Santa Marian Kamalen Advent handkerchiefs are available for free at the Cathedral-Basilica gift shop to wave during the procession.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON MASSES Aug. 15, 2020
NEWS RELEASE
Archdiocese to temporarily celebrate Masses in parking lots, and via live streaming during PCOR 1
Archbishop Michael Byrnes, consulting with the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission announces that Masses will not be completely halted during Pandemic Condition of Readiness (PCOR) 1. Priests will temporarily celebrate Masses at the different Catholic churches throughout the island in parking lots and via live streaming starting this Sunday, August 16.
(Please visit the Internet sites of your parish or access archagana.org for an updated schedule of Masses by early tonight. Please allow parishes time to update and compile their information).
Archbishop Byrnes is off-island on extended leave recuperating from surgery but is keeping apprised of the situation here at home.
The archbishop assures everyone of his continued prayers for our island. “The celebration of the Mass is the most essential endeavor known to the human race,” the archbishop emphasized in a brief message to his brother clergymen this morning, thanking them for their steadfastness.
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero announced Friday that she is placing the island on Pandemic Condition of Readiness (PCOR) 1 as of 12:01 a.m. Sunday. With much sadness, our Archdiocese will abide with the Executive Order. We care about the health and safety of Catholics and all people in the community.
Archdiocesan officials spoke directly and respectfully with Governor Leon Guerrero today and communicated, among other things, the Church’s absolute need to continue celebrating Mass at our parishes, at the very least, in parking lots using speaker systems and Internet live streaming.
The celebration of the Holy Eucharist is not a form of entertainment. It is not a type of social activity nor a pastime. Gathering in Communion with Jesus Christ, the author of all life, is essential to the life and soul of the Catholic Church and its people, who together comprise the Church.
The celebration of the Holy Eucharist is vital to the life and soul of the Church. It is essential to all Catholics because it nourishes and sustains us. Most importantly, beyond our earthly bodies, partaking in the celebration of Holy Mass is essential to sanctifying our souls so that we be united with God in his Kingdom of Heaven for all eternity. The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life."– Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1324.
Priests, staff and volunteers of each of our 26 parishes have stringently followed all protocols and procedures that ensure the safety of all Mass attendees and the celebrants at all of our live Masses these past many weeks. They will continue to do so now, during parking lot and live stream Masses. We earnestly pray that the PCOR 1 restrictions will be but for a short time.
All Catholics are reminded that if you are feeling ill or have pre-existing conditions that may put you at a greater risk to contract COVID-19 or other illnesses, please stay home. This is for your protection and that of others near you. The dispensation granted by Archbishop Byrnes excusing the faithful from Mass obligations still stands during this difficult time of a public health emergency.
The Archdiocese of Agaña’s Liturgical Commission would like to inform all Catholics on Guam that Masses for Saturday, August 15 will be celebrated as scheduled at each of our parishes throughout the island.
Regarding Pandemic Condition of Readiness 1 (PCOR 1) and its effect on Masses on Sunday and thereafter, please be assured that the Archdiocese will issue guidance by Saturday, Aug. 15. We understand how eager the faithful are to receive an official update. Thank you for your patience.
